INTRODUCTION

This is a one-trimester course designed to provide students with an opportunity to pursue career goals and experience authentic occupational situations. This program is designed to bring together students and the community, to the benefit of both. Students practice their management skills as they balance school, work, and the Career Field Experience course. They use their employability skills when they prepare resumes and portfolios, participate in interviews, and apply their academic knowledge to the workplace. When interacting with other employees and customers, the students are developing their soft skills. This course will allow you to:

Test-drive your knowledge and skills. Let’s be honest. Just because you are getting a degree in a specific subject, does not mean you are passionate about it. You might have a marketing degree and find out a couple of years later that is more than just thinking of TV commercials. Doing an internship gives you grounded experience of what your studies might look like in a work environment.

Find role-models and your future employer. Yes, there are plenty of leaders and worldwide known role-models. But they are not the norm, rather the exception. Doing an internship can give you opportunity to meet different managers, with diverse leadership styles and that gives you experience on how to manage your boss. One of the biggest assets you can have when you get out of school is how you adapt yourself to your boss style and become an added value to his/her team.

Strengthen your resume. It’s natural and obvious that if you have more experience, you will have a better resume. Yet, most students and graduates don’t have work experience when they leave college. They limit themselves to having great grades, do the school program and then go to the market. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with that. The different will come when you have to perform and demonstrate that you understand the business in a fast way, know how to work on a team and assume responsibilities.

If you do well, you have a network. Sometimes the different between getting your dream job and not getting it is that one reference, one call that you missed to have in comparison to someone else. An internship gives you the opportunity to increase your network, expand your professional branding, and having probably one or two personal ambassadors that would be glad to help you when you need them.

It can be the experience of a lifetime. I know that this might be doubtful, but many internships can give you the opportunity to work in areas that you won’t work anytime in the future, you might get to know people that become lifetime friends, or you can realize how passionate you were about something you only got to know through the internship you had. Having an internship can definitely be something that transforms your life and gives you new perspective. But be open to it as well.

P.S.  I do not accept new CFE students during the 3rd trimester.  Sign up early to save yourself a possible seat.

P.S.S.  Every year, we celebrate our hosts with a Breakfast Banquet.  It is a required event with a fee of $20, due by the end of the first week of the trimester.

FAQ

Q:  What if I am sick?  A:  Call your employer ASAP and leave a detailed message.

Q: What am I required to wear at my job? A: Ask on your first day!  Professional attire is typically the best.  You are creating an impression.

Q: What if Lake Shore does not have school?  A:  You are not obligated to attend your internship.  If possible, let your employer know ahead of time.  If it is a snow day, call your employer ASAP and leave a detailed message.

Q: Can I take pictures of anything at my place of employment?  Maybe.  Ask.  Some places will not allow you to take any.

Q: Can I drop the course?  Not really.  Once you have a placement, you cannot just drop.  There’s a long waiting list for other students to get in;  That wouldn’t be fair.  Make sure your transportation is reliable.  If you want to switch your placement during an upcoming trimester, we can try to work together to accomplish that.
