WEEK 11: Final Exam Essay Script

One of my biggest weaknesses is my inability to be patient.  Do you have this downfall, too?  Stop worrying about your website.  Look at Ryan and Tom.  They are fine.  Haha!

This week we will be writing an essay which counts as part of your final exam.  I will explain the details.  This essay is due on Thursday at the middle of the hour.

There will be a guest speaker from Specs on Friday.

Week 10: Must Finish Website Now

Your final page is due on Monday!  We will be checking them together and completing peer feedback/reviews.  This week will be your final chance to reupload your websites to our FTP.  Have a parent or teacher check your spelling and grammar.  Fix your errors.  Give it your all.

Field trip on Friday to Baker College.  Yay!  A day off is well worth it.

yaya

The MCWT website competition upload deadline is Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015.  We will disconnect your ability to upload anything, including changes, at 9 PM on the 12th.

Here are a few last minute words of advice:

  1. If your images aren’t appearing, check not only your image name but also the image extension. If you are using JPG (in caps)instead of jpg, it could cause that dreaded red X to appear. Right clicking on the image could show you valuable information in the source code.
  2. If you are getting error messages on your live link, look for easy solutions first. Make sure all your files are named with just lower case letters.
  3. Don’t use any numerals in your file names.
  4. Don’t use any special characters, including hypens. Underscores are fine and work well to take the place of spaces.
  1. Remember to check your site in the major browsers. The easy way to do that is via http://www.browsershots.org
  1. If you want to make sure your html code is correct, do  this:

Go to  validator.w3.org and type the address (the URL) of your page, using the long url that is displayed in the address bar on your live link. Validate it. If your HTML is correct you will get a congratulations message. Otherwise you will get an error report telling you exactly what and where you have done something wrong.

Week 9: Warning! Deadline Approaching!

Did you Trick-or-Treat?  Where’s my CANDY?  mMMMMmmMMM!

Page 5 is due on Friday.  Make a lasting impression. Even though it is the “easiest” content-wise, it still needs to count.  Get all of those sections completed.

Remember, your entire website is due on Thursday, November 12.  No more uploading.  No more corrections.  This is scary.  Work hard.

Week 8: Tables

Please personally thank your parents for attending conferences.  I really appreciate meeting your families and discussing your websites with them.

You are not allowed to miss class this week.  Do not get sick.  Do not go on a field trip.  Do not allow a dinosaur crush your transportation.  Why?  Tables can be confusing without a tutorial.  Plus, I want to see you everyday.  That should be the only reason you need.

Week 7: New Marking Period, Fresh Start

I am proud to be your teacher.  I love our idea conversations and graphic brainstorms.  You are brilliant.

Please take the feedback that you received from your loved ones to enhance your website.  Hopefully, they were critical and informative.  If not, keeping sending your link to others.  Someone may give you a great revision idea.

This Friday is your due date for pages 2, 3, 4.  Complete your multimedia and experiences ASAP.  You must have a visual representation of your content for each page.

Eva Smith, 3 time web design finalists and money winner, is visiting on Friday as well.  Yaaaaaaaaay!

Week 6: End of Marking Period

Did you enjoy homecoming?

Constructive criticism is important for learning and growth.  You can never get too much of it.  I hope I am providing you with solid feedback without making you feel frustrated.  I just care about you and your efforts.

Thank you to all of you who have stayed countless lunches to work on your website.  Your dedication is pretty fantastic.

Yay!  Our Index pages are completed.  You may breathe. . . Okay, now let’s get back to work!  Fix those mistakes.  Ask your peers for feedback.  You are never finished. 🙂

By the way, Parent/Teacher Conferences are on Thursday, October 22.  I would love to meet your parents.  Please direct them to this website to book an appointment with me.

Week 5: Gingerbread(wo)man Theme

I was on my way to work today and came up with my theme.  Yes, it is almost Week 5.  But, I want to use the story to illustrate my three treats:  Gingerbread cookies, waffles, and cupcakes.  I would create a gingerbreadwoman character and have her become a cooking chef hero at the end (cape and all).  Okay, so who wants to bring my dream to life?  🙂

Your graphics should look like THIS KIND of quality!

Your index.html page is due on Friday!  You’ve got this!

Week 4: Graphics

During this week, we will be working on the graphics portion of our website.  Begin paying careful attention to the logos, banners, and navigation of your favorite websites.  How could you replicate it?  Remember, you want your website to stand out.  What could you do differently?  Continue to take those original pictures including a background.

Week 3: All About Coding

I am so proud of your ideas, creativity, work ethic.  Keep thinking about how you could use your mindmap plan to create your website.

You will have a coding quiz this week.  Don’t forget to study!  Since this is our first assessment, you will want to perform well.  I believe in you.

An alumni asked me what my eight expectations are as a teacher.  Curious?  Here you go:

  • Don’t look for textbook answers. Go above and beyond and outside the box to discover original ones.
  • Be creative. If a person to the left or right of you (or across the room) has the same idea as you, it isn’t good enough.
  • Fail often, but continue to try even more.
  • Attendance and punctuality are important. I begin class right away and hate wasting learning time.
  • Help others when you see that they need it. It is the right thing to do.
  • Take good notes. You will use them repetitively.
  • Ask questions. A lot of questions.  Exhaust the limit.  Get the most out of every lesson.
  • Always overachieve. If a concept isn’t covered, try learning it on your own.  Then share with me how you did it.

Week 2: Let’s Begin!

Did you bring your notebook?  Writing utensil?  Stack of original pictures related to the theme?

We will have our first Photoshop and coding exercises this week!  Get hungry for learning as we dive into our curriculum.  🙂

CONTEST FEEDBACK

  1. Remind the girls that the judges are NOT judging their food choices. There is no right/wrong food selection.
  2. Mackenzie Johnson – her food choices are fine but she may be making too much work for herself with her “vs” idea AND she seems to be focusing on just two categories instead of three. Tell her KISS (Keep It Simple, Sweety)
  3. Tell Shana to focus focus focus. Her restaurant idea is good, but make sure she doesn’t bounce around too much. Again, KISS.
  4. I LOVE the “food fight” idea! (I am not a judge, tell her.)
  5. Heck, a girl could create a site about baby food or about foods that are blue.
  6. The homeless shelter idea is creative but, again, FOCUS. This is about food, not about people who work at a shelter. Focus on the food at a shelter.
  7. The learning-to-cook idea is fine, too. Focus, though.
  8. Let the girls know they don’t need long narratives.
  9. PLEASE don’t let anyone link to their personal Weebly sites. They may think they have no personal data on it, but they always do. They will lose 5 points if we find personal data. Last year, one of your girls had a Weebly link. Her home address was on one of the documents, with her phone number.
  10. Oh — tell Emily that she needs to proofread carefully, especially with  apostrophes and plurals or she’ll lose points for grammar/spelling. It’s not party’s and family’s, it’s parties and families.
  11. When I read “things to do with food without eating it” I thought, at first, that she was anorexic and was going to talk about how to push food around on your plate as you pretend to eat. Whew! Her idea is very nice.
